Water:

• Children bear the brunt of bringing water to their families.
• They must walk at least three miles each way and hold as much as five gallons in plastic containers.
• This activity occupies the greater portion of their day and leaves little space for school and play.

Library and School :

• A typical Aku child graduates high school without ever holding a book in his own hands.
• The only written material he sees are notes his teacher writes on the board.
• In class, children learn sitting on the dirt floors, or at old wooden desks that they carry from home.

The library seen in this picture was completed in December of 2006. The men you see worked very hard day and night to finish the project just days after this picture was taken. But the completion of this building is only a half measure. We need your help to breathe life into this library. Please help us give the children of Aku the childhood they so richly deserve. Help us to place a book into the hands of each child, and bring water closer to their reach so that more of their time can be spent learning, growing, and playing.
